SouthernStar Kennels is a small family-owned and operated Alaskan Malamute breeding facility located in the Horse Capital of the World, sunny Marion County, Florida. We specialize in dog breeding by focusing on select litters using carefully chosen, top-quality breeding pairs, prioritizing quality over quantity.
Our Alaskan Malamutes are sourced from top bloodlines in the US, Canada, and beyond. We aim to produce dogs that not only excel in conformation rings but also perform well in harness work, participate in various sports, and thrive as family pets and companions.
WHAT ARE YOUR BREEDING GOALS?
Our goal is to develop a top-notch bloodline through responsible dog breeding practices. We ensure our dogs maintain consistency in type and conform to the breed standard recognized by the AMCA. By breeding only those dogs that meet our desired criteria, we work towards achieving this goal.
WHAT REGISTRIES ARE YOUR DOGS REGISTERED WITH?
All our Alaskan Malamutes are registered with AKC and UKC, while some also have CKC registration (Canadian, not Con). Our imports also carry FCI registrations, providing robust validation for our breeding practices.
DO YOU HEALTH TEST AND TITLE YOUR DOGS?
Absolutely. We understand that the health of our breed is vital, and we conduct extensive health testing above and beyond the AMCA requirements for CHIC certification, which includes hips, eyes, and polyneuropathy, as well as elbows, patellas, and a full genetic panel. This thorough pet health testing helps us select ideal breeding pairs.
We also prioritize titling for our dogs. Each has a minimum of an IABCA HNRCH and participates in AKC and UKC shows. Although it can be challenging to achieve harness titles in Florida's weather, our dogs still work effectively in harness despite possibly not logging enough miles for formal titles. Additional performance and companion titles are also earned by our Alaskan Malamutes.
DO YOU OFFER REBATES FOR TITLING AND HEALTH TESTING?
Yes, we strongly support the idea that engaging in events, sports, and shows can enhance the bond between you and your Alaskan Malamute. When you invest time in training, you are not only teaching your dog valuable skills but also mentally stimulating them, resulting in a happier companion and a more well-adjusted family pet.
Our rebates are as follows:
Training Class: a one-time rebate of $25 if your dog graduates from a formal training class, earning titles like STAR Puppy, CGC, CGCA, CGCU, CGN, or SPOT-ON.
Conformation/Breed Survey Titles - Unlimited
$50 rebates per breed survey, V, VG, or G show rating, JRCH or CH in any country, and IABCA titles.
$100 rebate for VA, Seiger, Seigren, Vize Seiger, Vize Seigren, or GRCH in any country, as well as International CH, World or Continental winner, or FCI show title.
Working/Performance/Temperament - Unlimited
$25 rebates per standard title, certification, or temperament test, including AKC/CKC/UKC/FCI performance titles and therapy dog certifications.
$50 rebate for Working CH, Dual CH, or Triple CH in any country.
$75 rebate for International Working CH or FCI Working CH.
Health Testing - Unlimited
$50 rebate per OFA test (or equivalent) certification, excluding genetic testing.
$75 rebate for CHIC number.
Repeating health testing (other than genetic) earns the same rebate as the original test, ensuring you can always be rewarded for your commitment to maintaining your Alaskan Malamute’s health.
Rebates are not applicable for:
Titles or certifications obtained before the purchase of the dog,
Genetic testing done prior to the sale,
Titles or certifications awarded by unreliable registries,
Online service dog registrations not validated through a legitimate organization,
Emotional support dog registrations.
WILL YOU TAKE MY DOG BACK IF I CAN’T KEEP IT?
Absolutely. Our contract stipulates that should you need to rehome your Alaskan Malamute, you must inform us. We will gladly accept any dog we sold back under any circumstances. While we do not refund the purchase price, we may offer a discount on a future dog if you choose to return later. If you have a suitable home lined up that passes our vetting process, we can transfer any remaining warranties and guarantees to the new owner.
WILL YOU BOARD MY DOG IF I NEED IT?
Certainly! We are happy to board any Alaskan Malamute we sold, along with any other dogs in the same household if necessary. Please note, we don't operate a full-fledged boarding kennel and do not accommodate multiple dogs at once, so advance notice is recommended. Our rates are:
$20 per dog per day if we sold the dog and you supply food and supplies,
$30 per dog per day if we didn’t sell the dog and you supply food and supplies,
$30 per dog per day if we sold the dog and you supply either food or supplies while we provide the rest,
$40 per dog per day if we did not sell the dog and we provide everything,
$40 per dog per day if we sold the dog without any supplied food or supplies,
$50 per dog per day if we did not sell the dog and no food or supplies are provided.
In cases of emergencies, like natural disaster or military deployment, we offer free boarding for 10 days, then half price starting on day 11.
We do not board small pets or livestock, nor do we accept dogs with wolf, coyote, dingo, or wild dog lineage.
WHAT ABOUT SALES TO JUNIORS OR SERVICE DOGS?
We do not sell puppies to juniors because minors cannot enter into legally binding contracts. The sale must occur with the parent or guardian, who can then transfer the dog to the junior when they turn 18. Discounts on junior dogs are not available.
As for service dogs, the Alaskan Malamute is not typically recognized as an ideal service breed. We refrain from selling our dogs for service purposes to avoid complications since many individuals often seek discounted puppies under the guise of training for service work when they may not follow through. This trend negatively impacts the breed and often leads to rehoming issues.
WILL YOU SHIP MY DOG?
No, we do not ship dogs as cargo or through unattended means. You are welcome to travel to us or arrange for us to meet partway. We ensure a personal hand-off of your Alaskan Malamute.
WHAT ABOUT RESIDENTS OF HAWAI’I?
Importing pets into Hawai’i can be complicated, but we strive to streamline the process for you. We adhere to the checklist for Direct Airport Release, ensuring your Alaskan Malamute enters Honolulu smoothly. Your dog must have two rabies vaccines, spaced at least 30 days apart, along with a FAVN rabies antibody test, plus an additional 30-day wait after the lab receives the sample. Thus, your puppy will be at least six months old before arrival.
The vaccination schedule includes administering shots at 12 weeks and 16 weeks, followed by a blood sample taken at 20 weeks for the antibody test. We will handle everything, including the health certificate and required treatments, ensuring you have the right paperwork ready for the Quarantine Station upon arrival in Hawai’i.
We charge $10 per day for boarding, in addition to necessary testing, vaccinations, labs, and parasite control during the waiting period. We strongly recommend contacting our veterinarian and setting up a credit card on file for any needed services.
DO YOU SELL TO PEOPLE LIVING OVERSEAS?
Yes, we do sell to international customers. However, we do not manage any paperwork for exportation, aside from providing an export pedigree. You must visit our kennel to pick up your Alaskan Malamute in person, with paperwork prepared and ready.
You are responsible for transferring your dog’s registration to your country and covering any customs fees. Additionally, if import laws require puppies to meet minimum age requirements, we will keep your puppy until that age. We will charge $10 per day for boarding and necessary services during this time.
